Disabilty Football

As a club Gravesham wanted to make sure everyone regardless of their ability or disability has an opportunity to play football. With the main club up and running we wanted to concentrate on offering football to children with disabilities.

There are no other clubs in Gravesend who offer this opportunity and we work closely with Ifield School, Cedar Avenue. We started with just five players which is enough to make up a team.

Great Disability Play
Gravesend Disability Football

Our first team the under 13’s decided to call themselves the Dolphins so when we had enough players for a second team in 2019. With our under 11’s, we gave them the opportunity to name themselves. They decided on The Rhinos.

We train every Saturday from 10-11 at Kings Farm Playing Fields and play once a month in Gillingham at Play football. Our teams are affiliated to the Kent Disabilities Youth Football League which was founded in 2005 and
has gone from strength to strength.

Our disabilities coach Joanne who founded the teams and works with them every week. She said “ My first introduction to disability football was when I went to the Kent Disabilities Youth Football League AGM”.

That night I was moved to tears watching a video showing how many children and adults had been given this chance to play football and knew it was what I wanted to do for the local area”.

Although the players have a range of disabilities, no-one is excluded. I alter the training sessions according to their needs. I even get some of the boys in my other team to help out.

This has provided a great experience for everyone. Not only do the Dolphins and rhinos now feel like part of a team the others that help have learnt patience and how to communicate with others.

Our training sessions are great fun and you will always see us laughing and having fun. We create an environment where the kids feel safe and play without fear.

We work closely with the Kent FA and the Kent Disability Youth Football League and our aim is to continue growing.

In 2016 Gravesham Borough Youth wanted to give children with a disability the chance to play football.

There was no other clubs nearby who offer this opportunity  to train children with disabilities. Bring your children along where we will be happy to embrace them into our setup.

We train every Saturday and play once a month. The image accroos is Gravesham Borough Youth Football Club supporting LGBT.
